Science Debate 2008

For those who haven't seen it, there's a science debate being organized between the two candidates.

I've recently signed up and encourage you to as well. Science, technology and engineering are key to our countries continued ability to be a significant force in the world. In order to teach it efficiently (and not have children rejecting the concepts just because they're taught in metric), we really need to finish metrication as a country.

Obviously, the more we use metric in our daily lives, the more comfortable people are with it and the easier time they'll have learning in the classroom (teachers only need to teach the class concepts instead of the class concepts and the metric system).

When you sign up, make sure you mention metrication in the "Additional comments or questions for the Science Debate 2008 Team" section of the form.

For those interested, here's my note to the Science Debate team:

I'm really interested to know what the candidates plan on doing to finish metrication.

We've been stuck with two systems of measurement for way too long and it's hurting us in science, engineering and business. Finishing metrication would mean students were familiar with the metric system before they got into science classes and thus would be more likely to succeed (and we wouldn't have to re-teach them metric all the time like we currently do). Not spending time teaching our broken customary system in school would allow us to spend that time teaching our students important skills and would increase their likelihood of succeeding in science and engineering.
