Science Blogs has an article encouraging people to write to congress demanding that science funding for FY 2008 be re-instated.
You can modify the form letter they propose so I did so. Given that our broken measurement system negatively impacts science as well as our economy, I added that to the list of requests.
Here's my letter:
I am deeply concerned about the reduced funding for science in our FY 2008 appropriations act.
Given our country relies largely on science and technology, if we want to maintain our position in the world we need to be funding science.
We also need to finish the job we started decades ago by finally ridding ourselves of the broken measurement system that's unique to our country.
Just like the reduced funding for science, our broken measurement system inhibits our abilities to compete in the global markets and negatively impacts our lives in areas from medicine (people die from conversion mistakes) to the effectiveness of our industry (conversions are expensive, more so when they result in a mistake).
Please fund science and metrication. Our economy relies on it.
Sincerely,
Paul Armstrong
